Another comment from kamathin:

For the backend I guess something on the lines of opensearch (the one next to urlbar on firefox) is a good idea. Give a framework or a standard for describing different "engine"s.

That way, people can just describe their favorite engine
Which URL it should post to, whether it should use GET or POST, what the engine can share(image, plaintext, markup, URL, etc.) any limits (like image, text, or file size, etc)

Once people describe their favorite engine, they can install and use mutliple ones. Select something, click share . It would be nice to be able to configure whether to share instantly or ask you which engines to share over, and if it needs to be edited before sharing.

All this would add to the UI percieved for most of the time might be a share button. Or not even that if it can be tucked away into the context menu

from shell.

I think if we implement a "share this" feature it should use a standard API along the lines of Web Intents http://www.webintents.com/ or Web Activities http://mozillalabs.com/blog/2011/07/web-apps-update-experiments-in-web-activities-app-discovery/

from shell.

Yep, this would use Web Activities https://wiki.mozilla.org/WebAPI/WebActivities

from shell.

Could support the Web Share API https://w3c.github.io/web-share

from shell.
