This seems reasonable, but can't you change the defaults anyway via environment variables on the command line?
PORT=3000 lein run
I'd be interested in knowing more about your specific use case.

I don't have a specific use case at hand, I just found it very unintuitive that the parameter I give a process are overridden by the environment variables.
As far as I know, each and every Unix command gives its command line parameters precedence over the environment, so I'd suggest to stay in line with "what people expect".
