After some digging I think, I've found the reason:
The url http://localhost:3000/scripts/watson-speech/dist/watson-speech.js
references the file
examples/static/scripts/watson-speech/dist/watson-speech.js

But the postinstall script /scripts/postinstall.sh copies the file to
examples/static/scripts/watson-speech/
(without dist).

Last line of this file:
mkdir -p static/scripts/watson-speech && cp -r node_modules/watson-speech/dist "$"
should be
mkdir -p static/scripts/watson-speech/dist && cp -r node_modules/watson-speech/dist "$"
