Ok. Further benchmarking shows great write performance - but orders of magnitude worse read performance. Which is to be expected given the underlying technology used. We know b-tree performance for writes is going to be poor, but this is designed as an immutable service - a new release shouldn't be used in-place [although it can] but instead a new service linked to an updated immutable read-only filesystem for operational use. It would be helpful to have a benchmarking suite for different backend key value stores and serialisation methods in order to be able to repeat benchmarking as necessary.

Essentially fixed in 9645acd - much faster serialisation and fewer bytes (70% faster, 70% smaller) with same MapDB backend. I have a private branch evaluating lmdb.
