I was facing a similar need in a different context: I just wanted to get a VM object directly using it's managed object reference ID. But I couldn't figure out how to it with pyvmomi. What I'm probably going to do is something like:

view = content.viewManager.CreateContainerView(
    container=content.rootFolder,
    type=[pyVmomi.vim.VirtualMachine],
    recursive=True
)
vm1 = next(vm for vm in view.view if vm._GetMoId() == vm1_oid)
view.Destroy()

Or maybe I'll keep the VM's uuid handy and use content.searchIndex.FindByUuid, though that isn't applicable to this sample request. I'd definitely be interested in a better way of doing it.

@hartsock isnt that java code only possible due to how Steve wrapped everything in a base managed object class that isnt actually part of the library?
