I was about to submit an issue for this and just saw that you've already done it :)
I will probably submit an example script which does this in the next days, unless someone else submits it first :)

@michaelrice I have an example code here https://github.com/rreubenur/vmware-python-examples/blob/master/customize_unsupported_guest_os.py
The only problem is that StartProgramInGuest only returns the process id. If anything goes wrong then we have no clue to figure out.
