Hi there, what type of Arduino are you using? If you are using a pro mini, please ensure it is a 3.3V one.

The GSM device requires a 5V power source, however, it uses 3V on the RX and TX pins. So using a 3v pro mini is the easiest solution with an external 5V power source.

This project provides the 5V power source to the GSM via a 5V Step Up Converter that is connected to two batteries.

Is there a certain part of the section "Connecting to GSM A6" that confuses you, that I could help clarify?

I've added schematic image which I have to hand, hopefully it will help, I don't have the complete one on me at the moment. I'll see if I can find that later.
