Thanks for reporting the issue.
The problems from a dependency mismatch between vertx and junit5. You can fix it with the following versions.
<junit-jupiter.version>5.3.1</junit-jupiter.version>
<junit-platform-surefire-provider.version>1.3.2</junit-platform-surefire-provider.version>
<junit-platform-launcher.version>1.3.2</junit-platform-launcher.version>
You will have a warning message about junit-platform-surefire-provider being deprecated but everything works fine.

I'll update the template with the fixed version and investigate deeper but I'm affraid there will be at some point a breaking change.
I'll keep the issue open while I don't find a proper solution.
