I believe there is a check already (now on 2020?) that the current calibrations are out of range. It at least pulls errors when I have my current sensors disconnected. (forget the exact fault)

This may need to be tighter, or have additional checks. also, if possible, we may want to try and enable the pulldown on the current pins to detect open/disconnected sensors as there is more hardware being made with separate sensors.

Another thing I have been thinking about is a self test of some sort. making sure a phase isn't shorted to + or -, all fets turn on and off ok. all phase voltages read correctly.
If a motor is hooked up you could do a pulse that is deemed non destructive to test the current sensor.
you probably wouldn't enable this on smaller boards, but boards above 5-10kw may want to run this on startup always. (could be a config define).

Also, in your hardware's case, it is generally good practice to have shootthrough / hw overcurrent protection. many gate drivers have this feature by measuring the d-s voltage.
