vrty.org shut down permanently in 2016 (see http://peterlevi.com/variety/2017/03/changes/), and unfortunately the changes to remove vrty.org integration didn't make it into Ubuntu 18.04. Bionic has version 0.6.7, while the actual removal was done in 0.6.8-0.6.9.
The lingering vrty.org code seems to be causing sporadic freezes for some, though I've not been able to consistently reproduce it and target a fix. (Removing the entirety of the vrty.org code like we did in 0.6.8-0.6.9 is probably too invasive to backport into a LTS release.) This particular issue is tracked in Ubuntu at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/variety/+bug/1770187.
