Turns out this is a twitter-specific thing and their 'tfe' server. What happens is when you do that request, urllib3 does:

GET http://twitter.com HTTP/1.1

Whereas curl and friends would do:

GET / HTTP/1.1

Most servers are okay with the former, but seems Twitter's custom frontend server doesn't like it. So, one solution is to do...

url = 'https://twitter.com/' # Note the slash at the end

One thing we could do is implement similar behaviour to curl where we strip everything before the relative path, but I would prefer to avoid that especially for default. Let's close this ticket for now and reopen if it comes up again. :)
