So you're interested in creating a virtual mesh link via web tunnel? HSMM-Mesh did some research on it but found using VTun to be very unreliable. This may require some custom development that may be beyond the scope of this project, but I'll start looking into other options.

Yes, I am interested in this for a number of reasons. The first, mentioned above, is that there are places that we won't be able to connect to the mesh for a long time as they are just too difficult. There are some connections that might be useful in a disaster (if a node had internet access somewhere in the area!) to link another mesh in a different part of the state or another state entirely. Also, there are a lot of people getting interested that are buying routers, installing the firmware (or building a pi node!) that may not have anyone to connect to. If there was a way for them to connect to the mesh remotely that might keep the interest level up until there was another local node to participate with. I know that here in the hills we have a number of places that are going to be difficult to reach, and another option would be great!

Using a layer2 tunnel like tinc in bridge mode should operate properly. I'm going to investigate this some and will let you know what I come up with.

Check out this quick writeup (in german, but it translates OK) on using tinc with OLSRd: http://augsburg.freifunk.net/hilfe/setup-access-point/tinc-vpn-fuer-die-vernetzung-von-funkinseln.html

I dont have a sandbox setup yet but I will let you know soon how it works for me.

I am busy playing with the iptunnels method which has been used on the lynksys router version. I have it working but there are a few things I need to work through before it is 100%. However the next steps I am taking is to write a script to install the VPN. I am not a web developer but once I have it working I am more than happy to share what I have done and see if it can be included in this code. If not it I will make it available as a separate script.

I have it working. Will detail what I did a bit later and post the link here. Not sure how to interface it into the HSMM-PI webinterface. I am not a web developer. But hopefully someone else can develop this and I can stick to what I know the command line. ;-)

Share what you've done and I'll gladly make an interface for it!!

Right quick type up on the web. http://zl1fly.wordpress.com/2013/10/26/vpn-hsmm-pi-howto/

Let me know if you need anything clarified.

I have found a problem with that method. Works fine if you have real IP's however if you node is NATted then it does not work so well.

I have now configured vtun which will do exactly the same thing but allows you to connect from behind a NAT.

I will write up what I have done again and repost the link. It is also a much easier config.

The OLRSD config changes remain the same however.

Right so some details are here on how I did the vtun.
