I'm very sorry, apparently i had notifications turned off for this repo, so I did not see any of the issues on here for basically a year.
For this issue: removing the braces would have the file fail some standard jslint/hint tests, so I'm less likely to want to do it. I think the big issue for most is the sort of inside-out function calling, and just the fact this is needed in the first place. So closing this, but sorry it too so long to respond.
