Hi there @hendrawd, It appears it is not necessary to use listPreference.getEntries()[index] (indeed none of the index variable's related code).
Perhaps, only check for listPreference.getEntry() returning null (when there is no option selected), but setSummary() with null just works fine.

this code:
int prefIndex = listPreference.findIndexOfValue(stringValue); if (prefIndex >= 0) { preference.setSummary(listPreference.getEntries()[prefIndex]); }

could be replaced with this:
CharSequence selectedEntry = listPreference.getEntry(); if (selectedEntry != null) { preference.setSummary(selectedEntry); }

IMHO, your observation is right!
