You should be able to search that. The only problem I see with your query is that you should use single quotes instead of double quotes: employees.firstName : 'Johanna'. You may try it in the live application.
You may also share the annotations you're using for your relation and/or the exception if the problem persists.

Oh, yes. Thanks for pointing it out. It works. I have 3 way many to many relation something of this sort.

I don't know how you're building the filter queries, but you may use the FilterBuilder class as documented in the readme. It will prevent you from having to write queries manually and will give you a quick overview of all the features too.
