What exactly would I need to do to "support" this? From what I see the two libraries should play very well together.

I think it must be a (optional) feature part of the core of leaflet-sidebar or realy easy to connect to Leaflet-active-area (or similar).

My feeling on this is that it is outside the scope of what leaflet-sidebar does. Both leaflet-sidebar and leaflet-active-area are Leaflet plugins that can be used jointly together.

@frodrigo what is preventing this current integration? What type of API or added functionality would bring these two together (specifically)?

There is nothing preventing using the two plugins together. You need to wire the parts together to deals with sidebar toggle and sidebar width. I just think it could be done once for all into leaflet-sidebar.

I'm currently working on sort-of a successor for this lib (https://github.com/Turbo87/sidebar-v2) so I probably won't spend much time on this myself, but I'd be happy to review and merge any pull requests that implement something like that.
