The latest git version has been updated to use the ALSA and/or PulseAudio libraries directly instead of passing sound through pacat. This makes it a lot easier to implement a master volume control in an interactive player and is a better match for the CoreAudio support on the Mac side. If you install libasound2/libasound2-dev packages, the setup.py script should support ALSA. libpulse0/libpulse-dev packages should work for PulseAudio support.

I'll update the documentation on the site once I push it out into a stable build - which shouldn't be too much longer.
