If your bucket is in the EU zone your endpoint must be specified when creating the S3 class - otherwise the default US endpoint is used. Try this:
// Instantiate the class
$s3 = new S3(awsAccessKey, awsSecretKey, true, 's3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com');
from amazon-s3-php-class.

The example from Niels is correct. You can also use S3::setEndpoint() now.
