I've thought about it, but that could get really complicated really fast. Everyone has a unique and wonderful idea for what a prompt or statusline should like, and I don't want to maintain a 300 line statusline algorithm. For your needs, a one line invocation of matchstr()
should do the trick.
Cheers

oh, that sounds like a better solution, so i will just play with matchstr().
Thanks :)

this turned out to be more difficult than i thought. I keep getting error "E117: Unknown function: fugitive#statusline()". I experimented with matchstr and substitute. I tried for example:
let git_status=fugitive#statusline()
and calling matchstr/substitute here, but that did not work, because of above error.
Maybe you can point me in the right direction and say what am I missing.
I would appreciate some help. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you might be trying to call it before fugitive loaded? I can't think of many other causes.
