Can't install gem on OSX/i64 -- ARCHFLAGS overridden by extconf.rb about patron HOT 5 CLOSED

I can confirm this is still happens against 0.4.12. I would suggest that this line is removed:

if RUBY_PLATFORM =~ /darwin10\.0/
  ENV['ARCHFLAGS'] = '-force_cpusubtype_ALL -mmacosx-version-min=10.4 -arch i386 -arch ppc -arch x86_64'
end

and add documentation that if you want to build a backwards compatible version you can set ARCHFLAGS before running rake. After removing it, patron compiles just fine for me.

I think erickt's solution makes the most sense.

FYI, this will be a problem on most default Lion installs, so it probably should be addressed before 10.7 is released later this month.

I have removed the offending line. I don't have access to enough different hardware to know if this will cause a problem in the long run, so fingers crossed.
