Patron has supported SSL since version 0.4.0. You need to make sure that it was compiled against a libcurl that has SSL support. If so, you should be able to pass an https url to Patron and it will do what you expect.

Thanks toland, my fault... I had recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and forgot to re-add curl with SSL. If anyone else runs into this on OS X:
sudo port install curl +ssl
from patron.
