Yes. The trick is to recognise what is a file name and what is an input string. This could be an extra argument, data.table uses some heuristics.

We could also support arbitrary connections. The exchange i had with simon explained how this can be done.
Although for this, i guess i'd rather add support for connections in Rcpp.

I don't like the idea of heuristics; I do like the idea of working with arbitrary connections. I think that would be a big plus because it would allow us to read from .csv.gz, urls etc with no extra work. Maybe it's reading from connections that should be the issue.
