The new Router needs support for CNAME based responses and should transparently process them into a Host data structure accordingly.

In a CNAME based response from a DNS server, the answers[] section usually contains two entries, whereas the latter one is reflected by the question's type (A or AAAA):

[{
    "domain": "example.com",
    "type": "CNAME",
    "value": "server.hostingservice.tld"
}, {
    "domain": "server.hostingservice.tld",
    "type": "A",
    "value": {
        "ip": "1.3.3.7",
        "scope": "public",
        "type": "v4"
    }
}]

Additionally, the Router should switch back to a per-type resolving mechanism. In practice, most public DNS resolvers only answer to the first question and ignore all further questions.

It was a good idea to save network bandwidth, but apparently nobody on the other end wants to save traffic and latency :(

  • Router.resolve() should first resolve A, then AAAA.
  • Router.resolve() should identify CNAME cloaking. When the answer is a CNAME that points to another payload.domain, then assume CNAME cloaking and respond with no hosts (to effectively block cloaked domains).
