I'll start by saying that the fact that native module compilation failed does not mean that the WebSocket-Node module will not work. There are pure-javascript fallbacks for the native modules, and it should still work anyway.

That said, here's some general information about your other questions and how to get the native module compilation to work:

NPM needs the Node.JS header files (included with the source code) in order to be able to compile native extensions. That's why it downloaded the node.js source tarball.

The fact that it didn't build correctly indicates that there's something wrong with the installation of the command-line compilation tools for your machine. Make sure that you have XCode installed. I recommend installing Homebrew, as it has very good installation instructions and step-by-step suggestions for making sure your command line compilation environment is working correctly.

You can find it at http://mxcl.github.com/homebrew/

You may also consider installing node using the Node Version Manager (nvm) at https://github.com/creationix/nvm
Or also consider using homebrew itself to install node.
