The suggested wording for the "public repositories" but seems misleading to me.
Many of my repos are public i.e. not private. I could easily interpret that line as "since my repo is public, I can clone over https". But what about pushing? I'd end up facing the password/personal acces token thing and a beginner would be incredibly confused.
Cloning over HTTPS would be "fine" if you had no intentions to push, or you knew what you were doing with the HTTPS process yourself.
Many beginners won't, and given that cloning over SSH even for repos you don't intend to push to is absolutely fine too (like, you're not forced to use HTTPS for those options), it feels a little strange to me to introduce that distinction - that's on top of the misleading bit above.

We already occasionally have issues in the discord where people clone with HTTPS and run into trouble. And that's without us mentioning that HTTPS is a potential option.
If we mention it, I feel like more people will use it, and that's very much not something we want.

I think you are getting this because there is no explanation why SSH needs to be used. This is why I am suggesting this clarification
We are selecting the SSH option because in Setting up Git we setup access from your local machine to your GitHub account through the use of an SSH key
from curriculum.
I think we get it because people do not pay attention to the instructions in detail, TBH.
And I am with the others; introducing this adds confusion to the setup. We need learners to focus on SSH and not worry about other methods. Sometimes, we only introduce some options because it can overwhelm users with more information than they need. At this stage of the curriculum, we want to get them up and running, not have them become experts on the various ways to interact with GitHub.
I also am of the personal opinion that we do not need to always explain or justify every instruction in the curriculum, I think sometimes learners just need to follow instructions. Again because the explanation just adds complexity at a point that it need not be.
