@capdevc Thank you for the report.
What is your OS, distribution and version ?
I can reproduce it on Ubuntu 12.04 but not on brew version in Mac OS X.
python is a built-in package in the brew version but it is missing somehow on Ubuntu 12.04.

@capdevc I temporarily added back marmalade. I will try to find another solution later.

python.el is part of Emacs since 24.3 but the Ubuntu 12.04 package of emacs24 (version 24.3.1) in the ppa of Damien does not include it.
@DamienCassou Hi Damien, are you aware of this ?
I will implement a hack to add marmalade only if python is not found and emacs version is at least 24.3. The readme will be updated to correctly mention that Spacemacs is compatible with 24.3 and above.
