I'm pretty sure this isn't anything to do with encode('ascii') in this case. The following also works for me:
link.send_message(sbp_piksi.SETTINGS, 'uart_ftdi\0baudrate\0%s\0' % ('1000000'))
The problem with the first command is that the string \010 is interpreted by Python to be an octal character (any sequence of \ then three digits <8 counts as an octal escape code), not a NULL as intended.
Perhaps a solution to this would be to add a function for setting settings from the console and to fix #59.
