As far as I know, this current implementation of the calculate_temperature_em
shouldn't work for the new GOES data and will need to be updated, regardless of the fact that it doesn't work for the netcdf files. Actually, for the re-processed GOES 13,14, 15, we'll also have to be careful as this code works on the "old" GOES file data that has different scaling factors to the "new" netcdf ones.
Even if the code worked I wouldn't trust it as with these new GOES 16 and 17 the scaling factors are different, and I'm not too sure that the new temperature responses of the GOES-R data have been included. I've been meaning to chase this down to see how it was updated in sswidl - I'll have a check now

I have derived the new temperature and EM responses of GOES-R satellites running goes_chianti_response.pro. It is not yet added to sswidl.
You can find the new GOES-R responses here. For each GOES-R satellite, each channel has two irradiance sensors to
aperture the full dynamic range of the solar X-ray irradiance, where ”1” denotes the low-irradiance sensor and ”2” is for the high-irradiance sensor. The flag “xrsa_primary_chan” indicates whether XRS-A1 or XRS-A2 provides the primary irradiance values and similarly for B. The response for both sensors is added to the linked response files.
I am modifying _goes_chianti_tem
routine to make it work on GOES-R data as well.
