Do not intrude to pdf download intent about document-viewer HOT 8 CLOSED

Are you sure that you did not just make DV the default pdf reader and let your browser open pdfs instead of downloading them? I cannot confirm the behaviour.

3. Tap on any [pdf] marked result.

I get a popup with all my PDF-able apps that let's me choose to "open just once" with the selected app or "always open with it". Android 4.something. No idea if it is a special feature of my ROM though, doesn't look like it.

No idea how Android handles file associations, could you try https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/14231/how-can-i-get-a-overview-and-manage-the-default-applications-for-file-types ?

Surely this is the intent handler problem.
I just tested on 2.3 gingerbread. 1st I have cleared the default http
handler (default browser). Clicking a search result gave me:
. two times option with browsers and
. one time - the option with the default browser and the Document Viewer.
This last time, I think, is missing on my AOSP 4.2.2, i.e. the jb doesn't
have the handler for this case. I just can guess that it is the handler for
mime/x-pdf (which is wrong) or for http://...pdf
Anyway you can check with android-x86 in a virtual machine or with the
emulator.
