This can happen if server side libraries conflict with the libraries packaged in gwt-dev.jar. In your case its the JDT compiler library.
The GWT Maven plugin has a config property which tells the plugin to move gwt-dev.jar always at the first position in classpath. Maybe worth adding to the gradle plugin.
However, the cleanest solution is to split your project into three projects (client, shared, server) because then the client project will never see server dependencies and gwt-dev.jar can not cause a conflict with them.
