It could also be handle a bit more like HN does. If a repost is submitted within some time limit, then it could simply count as an upvote/boost to the initial post. Otherwise allow the repost as it's own post for new discussion/visibility to happen.

I agree - only an upvote costs sats on SN so we probably shouldn't auto-upvote.
I like the time limit idea. A week might be the right limit.

I ended up just alerting the user that it has duplicates and letting them decide what to do for now. It should be trivial to make this more restrictive in the future if need be.
