ok, had a bit more investigation and uri.port returns nil when the scheme is https, that seems to be the problem.

I've added the following just after setting the 'http' variable and it seems to work as expected now. Would it be possible to add returning a default port of 443 for https as it does 80 for http?

if uri.scheme == "https"
  uri.port = 443
end

thanks,
Stewart.

uri.port doesn't do what you think it does. You want uri.inferred_port.

Explicitly setting the port to 443 helped me move the problem forward to what it really was: SSL_connect returned=1 errno=0 state=SSLv3 read server certificate B: certificate verify failed.
