Yes, you need to compile librespot-java manually and then replace the executable that comes with spocon.

I see a guide for the Rust version but can't find one for the java version, do you happen to know of a guide for doing so?

Here are the compile information: https://github.com/librespot-org/librespot-java/tree/dev/player#build-it, I am not entirely sure where spocon places the JAR file, I think it's somewhere inside /opt.
