Hi there,

Thank you for reporting this issue. We are also working on running splunk as a non-privileged user for our installation. Work on supporting this started with these changes. We'll have some more changes to support running the service as the splunk user.

Currently, there is a bug in Splunk that prevents --accept-license --answer-yes -user splunk from working.

Running splunk as a non-root user was implemented in version v1.2.2. That should probably have been released as a "1.3.0" as that's a new feature, and it didn't make it into the CHANGELOG.md. I'm working on a new release that implements inputs/outputs (#22).

For chef-vault, you could have a recipe that installs the gem from your local source, then when the chef-vault recipe is included, it would already have chef-vault installed. I don't want to add an attribute, as that increases cognitive load in understanding this cookbook.
