Updated to beta5 and the error is now :
Entity of type Application\Sonata\UserBundle\Entity\User is missing an assigned ID. The identifier generation strategy for this entity requires the ID field to be populated before EntityManager#persist() is called. If you want automatically generated identifiers instead you need to adjust the metadata mapping accordingly.
Same for Group editing:

The id is there , but I am not sure if I did anything wrong.

After updating to RC1 last night, I got the first issue described above. This issue seems to be reported here as well : https://github.com/FriendsOfSymfony/UserBundle/issues/156 and I am not sure if this is the place to open an issue.
BTW I will update my vendors in a few hours and get back here with updates.

did you try the sonata sandbox : https://github.com/sonata-project/sandbox
looks like it's the best way to get the right configuration

what confused me at first was that you need the easy-extend AND must generate the inherited entities. so its the provided bundle extending FOSUserBundle + generating things from there (follow the tutorial step by step)
