Technically you'll be able to replace using "$wm --replace", but I see your point.
What WM are you intending to replace budgie-wm with? Reason I ask is I'd need to
do some internal tweaks to BudgiePopover to ensure it behaves (it cheats a lot right now)

Well, my personal favorite "xmonad --replace" but the point of this feature-request is to make sure any EWMH-compliant WM will work just as fine. Note: this is so-called non-reparenting WM so it might be worth taking into consideration.

Ok, so we'd need to have a failsafe fallback, i.e. budgie-wm itself, in case the process fails. Killing a live process might be nasty..
