Socket.IO-Redis uses the publish/subscribe (pub/sub) messaging paradigm built into Redis. The node_redis library requires that a client can only publish, or subscribe, but not both. This is why there are separate clients to each purpose. So the pubClient and subClient variables are instances of the redis client, also documented in the README.
