- I used
flex-wrap: nowrap
to keep the buttons from wrapping even if they're too wide. That's the default according to MDN, so it's odd to me that it affected anything, but it worked both in Chrome desktop's device emulator and in mobile Safari. - The button width was wider on iOS than on desktop, so I set it to the same as the height (previously not specified).
- I also had set the padding. Again, it looked fine on desktop, but on iOS there was a lot of padding on the left of the button contents making them wider than I liked.
