Here's what I'd suggest doing today. It only requires a line of CSS to get rid of the label's margin and it works for other controls too.

We need to rework a number of components that use slot detection to allow for SSR compatibility. Form control labels are one of those and the goal is that, when a label isn't present, the container will simply collapse in the future, meaning you'd only need to slot in the visually hidden label to achieve this.
