I have the issue that when I do this:

I cannot for example set bg to #000000 as it becomes orange. I am not sure why.

Can't reproduce. I tried the following and have dark background:

  overrides = function()
    if vim.o.background == 'dark' then
      return {
        Normal = {
          bg = '#000000',
        },
      }
    else
      return { Normal = { bg = '#FFFFFF' } }
    end
  end,
