Don't set secure to true, this is used only for server side sockets, from the secure field API -

/// If set use a secure connection, note TCP only, do not use for
  /// secure websockets(wss).
  bool secure = false;

This will definitely cause you problems, if the example is not working with secure set to false you need to investigate why that is, not set the secure flag.

Other than that I don't use AWS, the example you are using was contributed by user n80. All I can suggest is that you contact him or another AWS user you may know.
