WITH NO DATA is what we get from Postgres when we ask for the view definition.

  • The schema dumper uses the adapter to ask for views
  • In the adapter, we create Scenic::View objects which know how to turn themselves into schema statements fir for dumping to schema.rb

You can see that we do no special handling of NO DATA in this code path. Further, even if it were in our control, we don't presently have the ability to track if the original view was created with data or without.

Thinking through the usual use cases for schema.rb (rails db:schema:load), I think this behavior is likely fine. You run db:schema:load on a freshly created database which has no data. Having materialized views fetch their data would return no data anyway, right?

Incrementally changing your database is done with rails db:migrate which would honor the schema statement in your migration with regards to WITH NO DATA.

Am I missing something?

I've been trying for days to remember what the issue was and I can't put my finger on it. Oh well. At least it's nice to know that it's coming from the DB so there's definitely no realistic way to resolve.
