I was thinking about how to provide the most flexibility to Extensions and was wondering if the following concept might make sense:
executeExtension can only be called from an active extension. Extensions then implement their own function that calls executeExtension. In that function we can check signatures or any other custom paramters and then just call the executeExtension function.
