I've successfully implemented this by using onPlaybackStateChanged callback wired in connect() method. You just need to call setState() from background tasks in appropriate handlers (in this case in onStop())

How does setting the playback state notify of a stop?

Oh, I just saw the stopped value. Thanks.

I'll keep this issue open - a designated stream may be cleaner.

EDITED: I can NOT concur - there are alot more possible playback states, just look into PlaybackState enum and many of them should be properly handled. Creating dedicated stream is convenient (of course) but blurs the consistency of the API - what about other states, should they have dedicated streams? Anyway, let's the maintainer decide :-)

As you worked out, this can be done by listening for the stopped state. I also just accepted a pull request from @hacker1024 which turns onPlaybackStateChanged into a stream. I'll release that shortly. So you'll be able to get the derived stream you want with the following:

AudioService.playbackStateStream
    .where((state) => state.basicState == BasicPlaybackState.stopped)

Note there have been some changes to the playback state data structures so this may look slightly different from what you'd expect.
