We believe a Code of Conduct is necessary: 
In societies power is distributed unevenly because of intersections of gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and religion (or lack thereof). All human interactions happen within these power structures. Community events are thus always situated within structures of inequality. 
If you believe that a Code of Conduct is not necessary, it is likely that you are not negatively affected by these power structures and/or that you're not (yet) aware of them.
While a Code of Conduct provides a basis of shared values, it is not necessarily the only guideline for a community event. Organisers may implement specific actions on how to inform about as well as enforce a Code of Conduct.

Independent from the content of this specific Code of Conduct, we would like to point out why such a thing is necessary. In societies where power is distributed unevenly because of gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, ability, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and religion (or lack thereof), interactions happen within such power structures. Community events are thus always situated within structures of inequality. If you believe that a Code of Conduct is not necessary, it is likely that you are not negatively affected by such power structures or that you're not (yet) aware of them.While a Code of Conduct provides a basis for shared values, it is not necessarily the only guideline for a community event. Organizers may derive specific action plans on how to inform about as well as enforce a Code of Conduct.
