If the card layout is changed dynamically then requestUpdate() needs to be called on the card.
Not sure how browsers lay out grids.
I'll try it out and see if there's something obvious

I tried this out. max-width works fine.
What doesn't work is when the window is resized, the card needs to redraw.
Initial thought was the app code can listen to resize and call requestUpdate() on the card.
Perhaps the card itself should listen to window resize events.
