So, turns out the chip does use the onboard oscillator, it's just that the UART handling is not done on an interrupt, and the timesync messages can spend a really long time in UART buffers, which results in a bad time measurement.

The best would be to incorporate a UART interrupt handler to handle a timesync messages immediately, with flushing of the buffer on both the computer side and embedded side.

My thought is also that we might also be able to use GPS timestamps, or we could just perform a single time sync, and just let it run, without performing multiple timesyncs as time goes on. Since we have a pretty good oscillator, I think that we shouldn't have any time drift.
