conda package

If you could create a conda package that would make my life easier (so far so that I can continue to update my "bleeding edge" environment with "update --all").

BTW: Thanks for the very nice library, even though on the file (~130Mb) I tested it today it wasn't any faster than pandas 0.24 (both were fast), the builtin encoding autodetection saved me quite a bit of trial and errors.

Installation Issue

It seems you are using windows 32bit, you will need to find zlib1.dll and libiconv-2.dll from mingw 32 bits, (It is usually in the bin folder of mingw32 if you are using msys) put it in the folder win_libs/32bit, remove the sys.exit in the setup.py file and try again. Or maybe the dlls in the 64 bit folder work for 32 bit as well ... couldn't try as I don't have access toa 32 bit machine. Sorry!

Using a bigger file it fails : pyreadstat._readstat_parser.ReadstatError: Unable to open file

My idea is the file is to big for my ram and i want to use pyreadstat.read_file_multiprocessing in combination with pyreadstat.read_file_in_chunks.
Is it possible?
Or can i change the number of worker?

Cannot set `variable_to_label` when writing .sav file

Describe the issue

I wish to set a label on the column names when writing a file. I see that the library has the functionality to read such labels:

# the variables mylabl and myord are associated to the label sets labels0 and labels1 respectively

But I see no such option when writing.

I would be great if I could pass variable_to_label when writing a .sav file, for example:

pyreadstat.write_sav(df, str(output_filepath), variable_value_labels=variable_value_labels, variable_to_label={ 'q1': 'This my question!', ...})

TypeError: Expected str, got float

Describe the issue

When I use pyreadstat.write_sav to save the file, run the python script file in the terminal, this error pops up directly: TypeError: Expected str, got float, and then the program ends. I used Try expect, and it will skip it. I can't find any information that can be debugged. Is there any good way to debug this problem?

Problem Setting Variables width with pyreadstat.write_sav

Hi there,

I am trying convert a pd dataframe in to a sav file. Everything works fine (thanx to your package and I'm grateful for that) apart from the dictionary parameters.

I want to save some variables as integers and for them to have missing values as well (NaN)
I know that python does not allow for integers to have NaN values ...but float variables can.
So ...I was thinking of having the variable as float and to remove any decimal points when I convert/save my Dataframe in to a sav file.
[I'm using Spyder in Anaconda 3 (Python 3.7.3) and the package was installed through conda.]

So... I have created a variable_display_width dictionary with my variables and I was adding the dictionary when I was saving the file....but the file created did not use any of the data set in the dictionary.
I have also tried it with the variable_measure which was unknown (I changed it to nominal) but nothing happened again...

On the other hand I tried adding a column_labels list and it worked absolutely fine.

Is there something that I need to change when is save the file or is it the package ?

Here is a small example of my syntax. (Let's say that I have a dataframe named test that has the following two columns : Column 1 , Column 2)

variable_measure = {"Column 1": "nominal","Column 2": "nominal"}
pyreadstat.write_sav(test, 'C:\SPSS\test.sav',variable_measure = variable_measure)

pyreadstat.__version__ (0.2.3) does not match PyPI version (0.2.5)

The versions in pyreadstat.__version__ (0.2.3) and on PyPI (0.2.5) do not match; this makes it difficult to check for a minimum required version.

With the recent changes, do you think you could release 0.2.6 soon? This would be great for our effort to integrate it into pandas.

Reading from file streams.

It would be really nice if it was possible to provide a file stream instead of a file path.

One use case is to allow reading from a zip/bz2/etc compressed file, this saves disk space for large files.

UnicodeDecodeError: Not able to read sav file

I am not able to load a sav file when I read it using pyreadstat. Can you please look into this and let me know what is happening.

I have 3 questions here. These may seem very amateur but please do answer them if time permits.

  1. Is this something because of different unicode formatting? Can this be handled directly using this module. I know there are options to change encoding but I am not sure if it can be applied on particular data or entire datasets
  2. Is there a quick way to identify unicode formatting for a text
  3. Currently I use a list and usecols options to filter out these bad variables so that at least I get the rest of data. Is there a better way to do than my approach

Reading test file results in OverflowError: date value out of range

The haven package contains several .sav files for testing purposes:

SPSS: values not being read if value labels are missing

When I am trying to access meta.variable_value_labels , the values whose value labels are missing are not being read. I am not sure if this is an issue but is there any way I can access those values with value labels as blank?

working with big spss files

First I want to say this library is great!
We have some raw SPSS files that are extremely large(about 6GB with 1.3 million of vars). SPSS itself can work with those. Pyreadstat however cannot handle it even with the option of reading the metadata only. While there is still plenty of RAM available left in the system (the usage of Python is about 1.5 GB) and there is 64 GB ram on the machine. The stacktrace is as follows:

This happens both on Windows10 64 bit and Linux64bit with python(64 bit)=3.8 and pyreadstat=1.0.2

Now I understand that spss is probably not the best file-format for this data, but unfortunately, that is what we have.

setting variable_measure not working

I am tying to set the variable measurement and it seems it is not working:
setting wrong keys gives an exception:

String index out of range when writing dataframe to .sav

When trying to write a dataframe to SPSS, I get an IndexError. From the stacktrace, I cannot identify the source of the problem.

Unfortunately I am working with sensitive data and haven't found a way to reproduce the error with minimal data.

I use pandas to read excel, and then get the dataframe, directly use write_save to save, this exception can be caught.
I used traceback.print_exc () to print out Traceback, but I can't see any problem with the source code. I don't know which value is wrong, and it can't be reproduced.

Because there are more data, and it is the company's data, I am sorry that I cannot post it here.

I spent a long time on this issue, is there any good way to find the problem?

The trouble seems to start in line 295: 2020-04-30T00:02:25,498 pyreadstat/pyreadstat.c(672): fatal error C1083: Datei (Include) kann nicht geรถffnet werden: "unistd.h": No such file or directory
Translated: File (Include) can't be opened.

Inconsistent formatting information in SPSS metadata?

Hi! I've been using this package for a good while now, and love it immensely - it is the centerpiece of several advanced applications that I have written for organizing and modifying SPSS files, and it's made a real difference to my organization and clients. I can't thank you enough for providing it.

This issue is something that I detected a while back, but have heretofore just been working around; I'm not sure how to classify it, and I'm hoping I can get some information about how the metadata information is gathered.

Describe the issue

The basic problem is that there is a difference between these three things:
Here's what we see in variable view of SPSS:

Here's the original_variable_types:
{'ResponseId': 'A18', 'StartDate': 'A255', 'Duration__in_seconds_': 'F40.2', 'Finished': 'F1.0'}
...and here's the variable_storage_width:
{'ResponseId': 24, 'StartDate': 1024, 'Duration__in_seconds_': 8, 'Finished': 8}

Look at the two text variables: ResponseId reads the A18 'correctly', but the StartDate field is showing A255 when it should be showing A1024. If it were always that the variable_storage_width were the reliable source, I could use that to overwrite the format, but, looking again at ResponseId, if I did that in this case, I would get A24, which would be incorrect. Note that the numeric variables do provide the correct thing - I just left those in for visibility/comparison.

So I guess the question is, how does original_variable_types gather its data, and is there a way that I can predict which one of these items is the one that SPSS will expect, so that I can reliably hold the 'real' format? Or is this a bug, and the A255 is showing because it's hitting some kind of small-string limit? Thinking about it as I'm writing all of this out, I suppose 255 is a very suspicious number for that to insert...

I would like to install pyreadstat with the following command:
conda install -c conda-forge pyreadstat

but I get the following error:

UTF-8 codec can't decode byte

I'm getting this error when I try to read_xport on a sas file:

UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0x92 in position 3: invalid start byte

It's weird because pandas is able to load the file. I'm only using pyreadstat to get the column labels.

write_sav() and datetime gives wrong format

According to the Readme datetime, date, time should be converted to numeric with datetime/date/time formatting.

I am converting strings to datetime64[ns] dtype with:

df[field_name] = pd.to_datetime(df[field_name], errors="coerce")

or

df[field_name] = pd.to_datetime(df[field_name], format='%H:%M', errors="coerce")

for time, respectively.

The resulting sav variable has numeric type with F8.2 format

How can I convert it to SPSS DATE or TIME format?
Is this a bug? In case I am getting something wrong, please explain how to get the right format.

Hi, I am having a problem upon importing pyreadstat.

I am using Jupyter Notebook 5.7.4 with Python 3.7.1 from Anaconda 3.x on 64bit Windows 10. I pip installed pyreadstat within Jupyter Notebooks.

Upon typing "import pyreadstat" it produces the error \

pyreadstat\_readstat_parser.pxd in init pyreadstat.pyreadstat()`

Previously this package worked great and I am a big fan of it how well it works. I was attempting to use it when creating a Tkinter stand alone exe and it failed to include it in the creation. This was due to my needing to use Python 3.x not a form of IPython or Anaconda to execute this pyinstaller creation. After pip installing there it claimed this error, after some checking and editing nothing would help it work and it has not worked since. Any ideas on how to repair this? I have deleted the files and reinstalled and uninstalled and reinstalled in the clean Python as well.

macOS wheel cannot be installed without admin permissions

I just tried to pip install pyreadstat, but installation failed because:

ERROR: Could not install packages due to an EnvironmentError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/usr/local/zlib1.dll'

I know that I could use the --user flag, but I don't think this should be necessary. Why is the package trying to copy zlib1.dll to /usr/local (which doesn't have group write permissions for normal users)? First, this is probably a Windows lib and not needed on macOS. Second, libs should go into /usr/local/lib, which by default has group write permission for regular users.

The best way to read big SPSS (SAV) files?

This is just a question.

Reading a 260MB SPSS file takes about 60s using either the read_file_in_chunks or read_sav functions. I tried several different chunk sizes (1000, 10 000 etc) but there seem to be no big changes in performance.

So is this to be expected? I mean, performance section in the readme promises 7s read speed (for a somewhat smaller file and a different format).

This is just simple test script:

So this takes about a minute using Python 3.9 on MacOSX Catalina, MacBook Pro. Is this normal?

Is there any way to make reading the file faster? I'm not a Python guy, so maybe I made a mistake.

SPSS .sav file does not opened by pyreadstat. When I tried to open, following error is shown:

File example

File A is a file which is not working with pyreadstat. Sorry but I do not familiar with SPSS, so I do not know any information about File A. (I don't even know how to see the metadata of File A. Just my mission is loading this file into Pandas DataFrame.)

File B is a file which is finely working with pyreadstat without any errors. It's content is (maybe) exactly same with File A. File B was made by following procedure:

  1. Open the File A with IBM SPSS Statistics 25.
  2. Click the "Save As...".

Unfortunately, one of my work limitation is working with File A, not with File B. So I'm submitting this issue to find any errors in File A, or to request fixing this problem in pyreadstat.

I have been trying to make it work in a conda environment with pyton3.5 on two separate OSX systems and I always get the same error. I also tried installing in the homebrew version of python with similar results. I tried the simple pip install, also from Github, compiling from scratch...nothing. Any ideas what it could be? I do see libiconv in the conda list.

File written by pyreadstat cannot be removed with os.remove on windows

On windows, after writing a file (so it's closed), the file looks good and it is possible to delete it from windows file explorer. However if trying to remove from python with os.remove, it raises an error:

PermissionError: [WinError 5] Access is denied

Permissions on windows again look good, but if looking at the permissions with python like this:

oct(os.stat("test.txt")[ST_MODE])[-3:]

you get: 444, while in WSL you get -r-xr-xr-x

doing os.chmod(file_path, stat.S_IRWXU) makes it possible to delete it, but should this file be writable/deletable from the beginning?

Multiprocessing: Unable to open file

Describe the issue

I am currently reading the SAV file, but I have encountered a problem with the encoding format of the file and it cannot be read. The file contains Chinese characters, but I tried the GBK format, but it still doesn't work. There were also files with Chinese characters before, but they all worked normally, but this file does not work. Could you help me see what the problem is?
I tried to read the source code, but I don't know how to debug it. I will attach the file later.

UnicodeDecodeError when reading value labels

Thanks for the great library! I'm running into a UnicodeDecodeError when reading a catalog file. I tried reading the catalog separately per the instructions to try and isolate the problem. I tried switching the encoding to 'latin1' and 'windows-1252' but the error seems unchanged as a result. Looking through run_readstat_parser
