There's a reference on the wiki to http://www.mongodb.org/display/DOCS/Replica+Set+Tutorial. It's pretty good and detailed. You need to read "Starting the nodes" and "Initiating the set" sections in particular.

Thank you for your reply. The docs are poor but I did manage to get it working eventually. Just had to set "replSet = foo" and "master = true" and restart Mongo. I was not able to get the river to work with mongo auth turned on, even after creating a key file and trying to debug. I think this is a mongo issue regarding repl and auth. I have disabled mongo auth and secured the environment for now. I hope this helps someone else.
