The installation is called Pellow, in reference to Nicola Pellow who created the first web browser that could run on different operating systems, the line mode browser.

  • visualization
    • have the domain name of the web page, at fix position
    • light background color, can change over time
    • test some structure / glitch in the background
    • textual summary (EN / SV) of the key data. 'you are accessing 'tekniskamuseet.se' and your browser is fetching data from XXX different domains, located in YYY countries. The amount of information transferred for this page is equivalent to 253 book pages.
  • design the Pellow portal used to trigger the initial interaction
    • have a start button: “What happens when you browse the internet? – try it! ” // (swe) “Vad händer när du surfar på nätet? – testa!”
    • suggest some initial web sites to visit: tekniska, youtube, DN, tiktok
    • suggest some challenges: Can you reach Africa? Can you reach Sweden? Can you find a website that shows only one red dot? Find a website with as many dots as possible! Find a website with as much sound as possible! Visit your favorite website. How many other websites do you visit at the same time?
  • idle mode on the big screen
    • minimal animation and sound
    • overlay a message to invite visitors to browse the web
  • sonification
    • more contrast between little and lot of software activity
    • emphasize the dissonance between the initial intent (one domain name) and the amount of other domains

Display some text about the software activity of the browser. Switch between different texts from one page to another
For example

You visit <url that is in the url bar>, but your browser communicates with <XX> other machines

The <url that is in the url bar> webpage is as large as a <PPP>-pages book (for this we have 3000 bytes is equivalent to one book page)

There are <YYY> images in <url that is in the url bar>

Your browser communicated with <XXX> countries in <CCC> continents for you to access <url that is in the url bar>

Other ideas?

Those are good! The only other ones I can think of is

<N>% of the communication needed to load this webpage went to <url that is in the url bar>

This webpage runs code from <N> different places in order to function.

Although it might not make sense to expose that, since it might require too much knowledge to understand the significance. It could raise questions and curiosity though.

Some fixes and changes that we recognised need doing today:

  • Clear the globe at every reset/new page
  • Filter out the name of the chrome extension as a tab name
  • Remove emoji for challenge "Kan du hitta ... en enda röd punkt"
  • Simplify the home screen (too much info and different things for the kids). Description, Ideas for browsing, Challenges
  • Make the actual website less interesting (greyscale or something)?
  • Display the challenge right away and smaller.
  • Text-to-speech in Swedish reading the comments and instructions
  • Idle mode turns on randomly without inactivity.
  • Check the sentences again (challenges and comments on the page content).
